Meat Katie

London, UK

South west londoner Mark Pember (AKA Meat Katie) has had a long history in Dance music. In his time he has recorded for such prestigious labels such as Wall of Sound, R&S Records , Kingsize, Bedrock, Perfecto, Great Stuff, Renaissance, Saw not to mention his first record deal, signed to Iggy pops Kill City Records (as a bass player in 3 piece skate punk band Sandladder). Pember has also remixed for / collaborated with Arthur Baker, U.N.K.L.E, Boy George, Deep Dish, D.Ramirez, Peace Division, Chicken Lips, Robbie Rivera & James Zabelia, to name but a few.

To date Pember has released three Meat Katie artist albums, Off the bone (1998), Long to belong (2000) & Vibrator (2006), all diverse in style and vibe but glued together by his techy and lo-fi feel’, he has worked with such vocalist as Kurt wagner from Nashville indie/country band Lambchop, garage/trash vocalist Holly Golightly, new york house legend roland Clarkand UK Diva Katherine Ellis, in 2000 mark also made a one off alternative album ‘Never The Less’ under the name Avenue A, a collaborative projectwith Jason o’ Bryan co-producuer with the Dub pistols, it was this project that lead Mark to score the music for film adaptation of martin amis ’’Dead Babies’, an art house production by Gruber films (Shooting fish, waking ned), starring Paul Bettany.

Arguably its Marks work as a DJ that has really seen him shine, a world class performer with excellent technical ability and a great understanding of the dance-floor, he has built a reputation worldwide. Those who have seen him play will know that it is his diversity and energy that has earned him such respect, his tough Techy style, has seen him play across the globe alongside an eclectic group of DJs from Digitalism, Justice and Simian mobile disco, Soulwax and Erol Alkan, to Deep Dish, Steve Lawler, James Zabiela, Sasha & Digweed, Carl Cox, even Armand van buren & Marco V, and not forgetting some of the world’s top Breaks acts including, PlumpDJ’s, Stanton Warriors. He’’s supported live acts such as Chemical brothers, Pendulum, Basement jaxx, Represent, and Infusion, and He even recently played on the Valve Sound system as one of the only non-Drum ‘n Bass DJs ever to do so.

It is these djing skills that have led him to compile and mix compilations for such land mark series such as, Bedrock breaks, Fabric live & most recently Sessions’ for Ministry of Sound, a very unique dj, over the year she has perfected a cross over of techno electro with a subtle break beat feel (better know as tech funk) in recent interviews mark described his own playing, when pressed about pigeon holing himself genre wise he replied “The only thing pigeon holes are good for…. is pigeons”, mark is living proof that taste is more important than simply following the crowd and bandwagon jumping.

Mark has also been working on an audio visual show along side VJ Anyone(currently rated No. 3 in the World) together they have taken their unique show to clubs such as `Fabric, Urban Gorilla, Technique and Festivals such as Glastonbury, Glade, and many more.

Not satisfied with being a world class dj producer the self confessed workaholic also found time to set up and run his own highly influence LOT49 imprint (with Dylan Rhymes, whom he also shares a studio with in south west london under the same name).

Lot 49 has without a doubt maintained a reputation as being a taste-making label, never shy to experiment with multi genres and with over 50 releases under its belt featuring artists such as, Dubfire , Audiojack, D Ramirez,Elite Force, Dexter, Phil Kieran, Lee Coombs, Robbie Rivera, Marco Bailey, James Talk, Alex Metric, Lützen kirchen, Evil 9 and obviously Meat Katie & Dylan Rhymes, the Lot49 steamroller shows no sign of slowing down, it will celebrate its 5 year anniversary later this year with a label compilation CD/ with an exclusive DVD documentary about the label and artists.

Phutureprimitive
Portland, OR
Live Downtempo / Psydub / DJ Dubstep

Phutureprimitive is the moniker of Northwest producer and song writer Rain. If you were to look at early childhood photos, you would find Rain sitting at the piano plinking keys, grinning from ear to ear…..a true sign of things to come.  Continuing his early fascination with music, Rain was later drawn to electronic music, inspired by its ability to combine the best of organically played instruments and the synthetic pleasures of sounds more exotic to the human ear. After beginning a DJ career in the 90s, Rain began incorporating the music he was making in his home studio into his DJ sets.  That was all it took to trigger a full blown love affair with electronic music and the process of its creation…..and Phutureprimitive was born.

Phutureprimitive music is singular and unique in its approach:  Lush melodies drift across intricate rhythms, groove heavy beats and warm, fuzzy bass lines.  Often exploring a dark and dense palette, his music also manages to convey a sense of tranquility and beauty, engaging the listener into hypnotic movement and often escalating toward a full kinetic experience. Conceived and produced in a digital environment, his music manages to convey more humanity and organic warmth then typically found in an often cold and sterile genre.  Shimmering with cinematic qualities, his music ultimately speaks to both the mind and the body. Despite electronic music’s tendency to suffer a short shelf life, Phutureprimitive has already demonstrated a timeless quality with his debut album release of “Sub Conscious” on Waveform Records, which has managed to increase in sales since its release in 2004, obtaining a cult status among fans and collectors.  With a string of singles released in the interim on various labels, his second full-length release is currently in production, pushing his sound into new territories of emotional electronic music.

In a direct assault against the “lone producer behind a laptop” standard of live electronic music, Rain is taking the live experience to new levels. The Phutureprimitive live show is now realized as a band featuring drums by Thaddeus Moore, bass by Joel Crane, and guitar, keyboards and vocals by Rain.   The Phutureprimitive live experience breathes new life into an already sonically rich and stimulating musical offering, drawing crowds to the dance floor for a primal music experience.  Constantly defying convention, the Phutureprimitive sound is not solidly rooted in any single genre nor easily defined, but draws influences from many subgenres including Downtempo , Glitch Hop, Dub, Breaks, Psychedelic Rock, and more.  Phutureprimitive has become a musical force to be reckoned with, performing in cities and countries throughout the United States, and Europe including New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, England, Scotland, Portugal, Holland, Italy and Croatia.

Brooke Would
Los Angeles, CA
Sexy Tech Thump

Funk is subjective. Everyone has a different idea of what the word means but most agree it’s a good orbit to be in. To Brooke Would, if it’s going to be good, it’s got to be funky…

Brooke’s love of dance music began in the mid 1990s, when her nomadic nature landed her in the middle of Boise, Idaho’s burgeoning rave scene. A Southerner at heart, Brooke has always been drawn to funk and soul music. In the sea of late 90s trance anthems, she started to miss house music. In 1998 she began buying records, genuinely curious if the music that moved her was still being produced. Soon she had a collection that turned into a gig. Since her first gig in 2000 she has captained the decks on hundreds of occasions with great success. Brooke has appeared from Idaho to Arizona and all states west, spinning at concerts, competitions, clubs, festivals, and raves… some with thousands in attendance, and alongside legendary performers and musicians. Whether she is headlining a festival or opening at a local club she is always mindful of the setting, and can be counted on to lay down a set to be remembered.

Over her decade behind the decks she kept her hand steady and stuck with the music that moved her. That simple dedication crafted a signature sound, something she lovingly calls sexy tech thump. A blend of house, techno, and broken beats that encompasses a wide spectrum of music and encourages spontaneous movement in strangers.

In a move designed to align her job and her love she went to Arizona to study audio engineering in 2005. For the last four years she has been working in studios around Los Angeles, supplementing her ever expanding skill set as an audio engineer. Brooke channels a lot of her creative energy into her label and music blog thefunkykind.com. Focusing on quality music and writing has payed off, and provided a platform for the artists featured to develop and share their passion. Proof that quality not quantity is what people want, each new post on TFK draws in thousands of visitors. Brooke aims to establish The Funky Kind as a tech-household name, and use it as a springboard for her own work as a producer.

Damian’s techno affliction began at 16 when introduced to the sounds coming out of Germany at the time.  Members of Mayday, Sven Vath, Schiller and Juno Reactor being some of the first.  He later moved to Boise, Id for school and found the culture who also shared the same affliction. Techno is a serious disease people! He moved back to his hometown in S.E. Idaho and helped build a solid community there as well.  The commercial techno scene was just about to run viral in the U.S.  He bought turntables, began tinkering with production and started building his vinyl collection.  He then moved to Madison Wisconsin and was greeted with open ears.  Much was different, much the same.  But his backdrop needed mountains once more so he now currently resides in Portland, Or.  After becoming somewhat established in the outer NW, he progressed through CD mixing into deeper digital and production realms and migrated to ableton to fully integrate his production live. Today with infinite flexibilty, he dabbles in various production and mixing styles, experimenting with sound to expand our levels of musical consciousness.

Drum n’ Bass

After several years of classical training, I opted to start producing electronic music in the mid-nineties using tracker programs and very primitive multi-track recording devices.  I was totally unaware of the dance music scene and primarily listened to and made experimental music.  Later on in the decade, I became aware of dj mixed albums that were available to purchase and started to take apart the basics of what I was hearing, still never attending an event myself.  By the time that I made my way to my first party, in my early teens, I was starting to produce dance music and had acquired some second hand decks and records.  By early 2000, the kindness and support of local artists and promoters allowed me to start bringing my music to the attention of anybody willing to listen.

Longtime Boise Dj, stEVIL covers  many genres in his musical stylings and continues to grow more experimental in the selection of tunes he plays.  Starting with NRG early in his Dj career, he quickly moved on to tech house & breakbeats….preferring the harder techno or industrial bassy sounding material.  Keeping to the darker side of things, stEVIL will be mixing it up with some of that industrial style dance & floaty idm house combined with some experimental ambient awkwardness as well.

Being one of the three “founding fathers” of the pr0cess 0rganization and the Esthetic Evolution Festival, stEVIL has embraced the promoting & artistic intrigue of the that and focuses his energies mainly there.  So despite appearing rarely….mostly at Burning Man community events such as the Idaho Decompression parties & of course at Burning Man itself…he still enjoys swaying yr dancing feet & mind when he can…aiming to get you moving in this early evening performance!!
